How can Yoga therapy help with addiction treatment

Hatha Yoga is translated as ha meaning “sun” and tha meaning “moon.” This refers to the balance of masculine aspects—active, hot, sun—and feminine aspects—receptive, cool, moon—within all of us. Hatha yoga is a path toward creating balance and reuniting the mind, body and soul and in our physical bodies developing strength and flexibility.

Hatha yoga is a powerful tool for self-transformation. It asks us to bring attention and awareness to our breath, which helps to still the fluctuations of the mind, control the release of triggering hormones, cope with disappointment and manage stress.

It is the journey to the self, through the self using poses (asanas), guided meditation and breathing techniques.

The body’s natural reaction to stressful and life-threatening situations is the release of AdrenalineCortisolNorepinephrine, more commonly known as the fight or flight/stress hormones. While this response is a survival mechanism, intended to save you from immediate physical situations or danger, it can also be experienced when you encounter physical stressors, such as volatile relationships,  the hardships of entering recovery, rebuilding damaged tissue and nerves or reversing chronic pain.

When we ask our bodies to move in ways that are uncomfortable, or to release our minds from harmful thoughts, we stimulate these hormones. In turn, we combat them through breath, awareness, positive thoughts, images and responses. The combination of yoga and meditation is vital to re-stimulating a unity within oneself that is often disconnected in individuals who have used drugs or alcohol to numb thoughts and feelings.

Yoga and meditation can help those recovering from addiction to overcome unpleasant feelings and sensations, release anger and resentment, increase positive thoughts, and become less reactive to destructive thoughts. All of these benefits contribute to establishing a healthy mind and body, which is the foundation of a successful recovery.

Yoga is beneficial in all stages of quitting an addiction: withdrawal, detoxification and abstinence. It is also a helpful addition for our clients with dependency on pain relief medication. Incorporating yoga into our detox program is very much advantageous. As we at NEWORLD always follow evidence based approach for our treatment protocol, we believe in the healing power of a therapeutic touch. The release of endorphins makes yoga a perfect addition to NEWORLD medical detox program.

Together with NEWORLD healthy food served, this allows for all systems of the body to function more efficiently with improved circulation and a reduction in tension of the soft tissues and musculature.

Massage session

A massage session is offered upon request (charge extra) by our RMT.

Massage therapy can have very positive effects to our clients going through drug and alcohol detoxification.  When going through the withdrawal process, dopamine levels are lower than average.  Massage combats this deficit by naturally increasing the levels of dopamine in the brain throughout the detoxification.

Massage can also play a vital role in decreasing stress.

Recovering from an addiction puts the body through a tremendous amount of stress, and massage decreases the production of the stress hormone cortisol in the body. It also triggers the parasympathetic nervous system – which helps slow both breathing and heart rate, therefore relaxing the body. Detoxification is an important part of addiction recovery. The remaining drugs in your body must be pushed out to give you a chance of full recovery. Massage will also help with detoxification by increasing the circulation of blood and lymph. This helps the body flush out the toxic chemicals left over from drug abuse more quickly.
